VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General's report on the vital statistics of the principal towns of New Zealand during the month of September, 1879, is as follows :

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases, Population.—ln the cases marked thus the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then taken the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the Ist January, 1879. The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 513, against 489 in August, I - u increase of 24. The deaths amounted t" ; 'ii September, being a decrease of 16 on the number in August. Of the above deaths, males contributed 107 J females, 65. 77 of the deaths were of chiidren under five years of age, being 47'53 per cent, of the whole number ; 59 of these were of children under one year of age.
