RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Monday, October 20. (Before T. A. Hansford, Esq., R.M.) ■DRUNKENNESS. Seven offenders against the laws of sobriety were dealt with in the usual manner, and one of them, F.liza Wilson, received a sentence of six weeks’ imprisonment for being an habitual drunkard. OBSCENE EXPOSURE. James Daley, for obscenely exposing himself in Fraser’s-lane, was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment with hard labor. BMBEZZEMENT. Frank Nicholson was charged, on remand, with embezzling monies the property of J. H. Wallis, the proprietor of the New Zealand Punch. From the evidence of Mr. Wallis it appeared that the accused was employed as canvasser at Is. per week and a commission. R. King deposed to having given Nicholson £1 as a subscription to Punch. He got a receipt, bat did not get any papers. Wm. Wallace, W. F. Burgess, and Constable Brunstall also deposed to having given accused several sums for the paper, and obtaining receipts for the money, and Constable Stewart deposed to the arrest of the prisoner at the Hutt. The case was then remanded till Friday. CIVIL OASES. In the following cases judgment was given for plaintiffs ;—Westnip v. Smith, £3 ; Crowther v, Preston, £3 16s. ; Monteith v. Barber, £l2 4s. 9d.; Garrett and Another v. Hitchens and Another, £5 ss. 7d.; Gawne v. Squires, £l3 6s. XOd.; Dudgeon v. Benge, £1 11s. 3d.; Same v. Ebden, £1 10s.; Tabor v. Tnglis, £3O. In the case of Guildford v. Humphries, claim for £5 45., judgment was given for defendant. The case of Taylor v. Wallis, claim for £ls, was farther adjourned till Thursday.
