ARRIVAL OF THE AMELIA ROSS. Tho barque Amelia Ross arrived in harbor at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, after a protracted passage of 120 days from New York, She is a smartlooking little iron vessel of 350 tons register, under the command of Captain Thoms, and contrary to expectation came up the harbor flying tho English ensign. She is a British bottom, owned by Messrs. Ross and Co., of ilnverkeithing, chartered by the firm of Cameron and Co., of New York, for the present voyage. The ra'hcrlong passage for a vessel of her class must bo attributed to the severe weather encountered during tho previous, and the prevalence of calms throughout the latter portion of the voyage, tho barque having barely steerage way. When about three weeks out the chronometer broke down, and for the remainder of tho voyage Captain Thoms had to trust entirely to dead reckoning for the navigation of tho vessel, whhh must have entailed an amount of anxiety and careful study on his part, only dispelled on making the New Zealand const. The Amelia Ross comes consigned to Messrs. Bannatyne and Co. with a cargo of notions, the principal portion of which is for this port, and the remainder for Auckland. She left New York on the 14th June ; experienced fine weather till the 24th, when it set in squally from the E.S E. t (luring which she carried away the main topgallant yards in the slings!; thence moderate weather until sighting Cape Lugallas, on the 18th August, when the correct longitude was obtained (the chronometer having Jbroke down on the 11th July). On the Ist September she encountered a fierce gale from the north-west, several heavy seas breaking on board, smashing the port bulwarks, besides other slight damage. .Sighted the islands of St Paul and Amsterdam on the 9th, and passed between them. Again corrected longitude. She had then very severe weather from tho W.N. W. to the 29th, when the wind shifted to tho westward, and blow with hurricane force for twenty-four hours, the barque running before it under closed reefed foresail, when the wind shifted into the south-west. Mowing as hard as ever, with squalls of hailstones. (From the dead reckoning the vessel was supposed to be to the eastward of Tasmania, which turned out to be correct. She then hauled to tho northward for the latitude of Cook Strait.) In latitude 40'44 south the weather moderated, and then fell calm, continuing so till making Cape Farewell, on the 11th instant. Was off the Heads on Sunday night, when site hove-to. At day. light she was found to be a long way to leeway. Picked up the southerly wind at 10 a.m. yesterday ; took the pilot on board at 3 p.m., who broug’nt her into harbor as above. J
