RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Friday, October 10. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., E.M.) THE MOUNT COOK SCHOOL ROBBERY. Clara Edwards, who had been remanded from the previous day on a charge of stealing a cloak from the Mount Cook girls’ school, was brought up for sentence. Mr. Mansford ordered the girl to be imprisoned for one hour, after which to be sent to the Dunedin reformatory for three years. A DISORDERLY HOUSE. Margaret Baker was charged on the information of Superintendent James with keepings disorderly house in Wingfield-street. Mr. Gordon Allan for the defendant stated that the nuisance was abated, and the girls who. had caused the disorder had left the house,. This was confirmed by the police. Mr. Mansford said he would bind defendant over to appear in answer to the charge in a month's time, and if the nuisance was them still found to exist the defendant would be sent for trial. Otherwise there would be an end tO' the matter. (Before Messrs. Seed and Halse, J.P.’s.) LARCENY. Houora Morgan, for the New Zealander Hotel robbery, was further remanded for a week, Mrs. Mountain being still too unwell to attend. At the expiration of the week the case to be heard whether Mrs. Mountain was present or not. 1 FALSE PRETENCES. Charles Langstone was charged with obtaining 15s. from Elizabeth Tollens by means of false pretences. The case was remanded till Tuesday, defendant being admitted to bail, himself in £lO, and two sureties of £5 each. EMBEZZLEMENT., George R. Farrell pleaded guilty to embezzling 95,, the property of Mr. Evans, saddler; and also to stealing a number of small articles valued at Gs., the property of Mr. Evans. He was further charged with stealing Gs., also Mr. Evans’s property, but pleaded not guilty to this. The charge was, however, proved against him. Detective Browne stated that he had known the {accused from childhood, and had never known anything against him before. His parents were respectable people on the West Coast. The Bench sentenced him to one month's imprisonment for each offence, the sentences to run concurrently. CITY BYE-LAWS. Eobert Perret, Samuel Taylor, Arthur Everett, Johannes Winelen, and Charles Biddles, were each fined Is. and costs for driving after dark without lights, and Peter Henry and Frank Drummond, for similar offences, were fined ss. each and costs. James Farr, for furious driving on Lambtonquay, was mulct in the penalty of £1 and costs. George Primer, who pleaded guilty to slaughtering animals on his premises in Torystreet, was fined £1 and costs.
