John Brinsmead and Sons, claims notice, not only on account of its beauty and richness of tone, but specially for some ingenious mechanical novelties ; the most important being the addition of a third pedal, by means of which the sound of any note or notes may be almost indefinitely prolonged at the will of the player. Thus, bass notes may be sustained after being struck by the left hand, which may then he taken away, and, with the right hand, may execrate the most brilliant staccato passages, thus giving almost the effect of four hands The patent ‘ check-repeater action,’ a speciality of Messrs. Brinsmead, enables the performer to command with ease the most lapid reiteration of the same note ; the facility of the key movement in general being such that glissarido passages can be executed with such perfect ease as to render them practicable with the lightest touch. The volume of tone is intensified by a peculiar construction of the sounding board, another improvement being the system of bridging, by which the vibrations are increased and rendered sympathetic.
