TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —The Governor’s Speech, from which so much is always expected and so little ever obtained, lias been again duly delivered. In this speech, however, the Premier has evidently exceeded himself in making a very pretty little speech, and saying nothing but what can be so interpreted by him as to suit his purpose—whatever that purpose may be; the only departure being in his remarks on the railway connecting the East and West Coasts of the Middle Island, which is cipahla of but one interpretation, and that is (read in the light of the Public Works Statement of last session and Mr. Blair’s report)—that it he hung up. I wonder what Mr. Richard Reeves will think of this part of the Speech, as he is pledged to support that party, whoever they may be, that are most likely to construct that railway. No doubt Mr. Reeves will be put on this select committee which is to go into the whole question, and perhaps be made chairman of the same, and while they are engaged in this exhaustive examination the five million loan will be obtained and appropriated for other works. I should think this proposed committee would be a little too much even for Mr. Reeves, the object of the proposition being so very patent—viz., to indefinitely postpone the whole thing. No doubt Mr. Reeves will, as usual, receive wondrnnsly big promises, and most solemn assurances, from air George Grey, which will be most faithfully transmitted to his constituents. Grey’s promises are, however, a kind of food the good folks on the West Coast are beginning to loathe. —I am, &c., Liberal,
