WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —As an old member of the Wellington Racing Club, I am glad to see that the Wellington Press, while complimenting the stewards for their painstaking endeavors, comment much upon the little support given them by the gentlemen of this city. I would like, however, to make one remark on this eccentricity. During the time I was secretary to the old Sporting Club (for a sporting club it was, indeed, in old days), I attended a race meeting at Canterbury. I was told before I went that, as representing our club, I should receive a hearty welcome there, and so I did, far beyond my expectations ; but I admit I was somewhat surprised to find how much the Canterbury men thought about the success oy

otherwise of our Wellington club. They considered it either as a stumbling block, or a great benefit, just as the case might be. Now, I know that the same feeling exists towards our club both in the Wairarapa and in Wanganui, and 1 believe also in Napier, Auckland, and elsewhere in New Zealand. 1 hope therefore that the apathy alluded to is more apparent than real. See what immense gatherings now take place at our races at the Hutt Parjc if the weather is only at all favorable. Should not this fact alone tend to encourage support ? I know I am not singular when t state that reports of good sporting meetings sent home to old England do quite as much to elicit immigration of settlers of the class so much wanted here as even the stupendous and elaborate political discussions.—l am, &c., William Bromley.
