The Herald reckons— Government, 41 ; Opposition, 39 ; Indcpendent, 7. , A protest has been lodged against Lundou s election for the T.av of Islands, on the ground that lie was elected on a c irrupt roll ; and Sydney Taiwhanga, who entered the prAe -t in this ca<e, ah;' protests against the election of Mohi Tawhai for the Northern Maori District as being a native assessor. The complete returns for the Geraldine election give the following result : —Studholme, 342 ; Deane, 2'M. The various cricket clubs are holding m etings, in view of an early commencement. Mr. Neilson has intimated that he dojs not intend to take an active part in cricket this year. Major Te Wheoro will be entertained at dinner by his supporters. Samples of hematite paint are being manufactured at the Thames. Smith’s Tim Whifiler aud Maid of Honor were sent away by the Taiaroa. At the Police Court John Skinner was charged with unlawfully removing three guns from Gisborne to Auckland, on board the Minnie Hare. The case was adjourned. Hastings, Tuesday.
The Native Lands Court held a sitting hero to-day for the purpose of hearing the Otamakaptia case. Judge Heale presided, and Dr. Bailer appeared as counsel for the Crown. The claim is an important one, as it comprise* 120,000 acres, for which the Government have agreed to pay £60,000 on compute m of title. Upwards of a hundred claimants have come across from Kangitikei, aud Henata has made great preparations at Omahu, to which place the Court has now adjourned. Charleston, Tuesday.
The (schooner Shepherdess, Captain Bilby, parted her lines this morning, and capsized in Constant Bay. No lives were lost. She is now breaking up fast. She is insured in the Colonial Insurance Company. The crew lost everything. The Shepherdess ia owned in Wellington, Christchurch, Tuesday. The Graud Lodge Session, Order of Odd Fellows, American Constitution, was opened last night under the presidency of E.W.G.W. Brother Wheeler. Fifteen delegates were present. The Grand Lodge will sit daily till Thursday next. Mr. Bossehnan, manager of the American Sewing Machine Depot, died very suddenly last night ; it is supposed from heart disease. The official declaration of the poll for Coleridge was made to-day, the numbers being the same as previously transmitted on Monday night. Some thieves broke open a shop belonging to Mr. Garrett, of Ashburton, and stole a quantity of tobacco, but were disturbed by the owner returning before they had secured further booty. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court Henry Bobeitson, charged with issuing a valueless cheque was further remanded. At the Christchurch Court, Jane Mahoney, charged with forging a cheque on her husband, was remanded to Rangiora. Six drawing-room cars have arrived from America for the Railway Department. These cars, which are beautifully fitted tip, are intended to be used with express trains. Only one of the cars has yet been put together. There is likely to be a very keen contest for the Mayoralty this year, as already two candidates are spoken of, in addition to the present Mayor. The Grand Lodge session of Odd Fellows, American Constitution, was continued to-day, the sitting commencing at 10 o’clock. The business is expected to conclude on Thursday, when the newly-elected Graud Lodge officers will be installed.
