IT Y COUNCIL ELECTION. COOK WARD. To Mr. C. F. Wouth, Tory-street. Sib, —We, the undersigned duly qualified Electors of Cook Ward, respectfully request that you will allow yourself to be nominated as a Candidate in the forthcoming Election to represent our Ward in the City Council, believing, as we do, that your practical knowledge, general business experience, and energy, entitle you to our confidence in forwarding our interests. C. Plimraer W. F. Strike W. Andrews J. W. Bacon Captain Stafford C. White W. Black P. Moeller Battersby H. Nash D. Chisholm And 58 others Gentlemen, —I have received your requisition and with great pleasure accede to your wishes ; and if I have the honor to be elected, I hope to prove that I shall not be found wanting in the knowledge of your requirements, or in energy, zeal, and persistency in forwarding your claims upon the considerations of the Councillors and the funds at their disposal. I hope in a few days to have the pleasure of addressing you in various parts of our Ward, at which time and places I shall have an opportunity of placing my views before you, and answering any questions relative to Municipal matters you may think fit to ask; therefore in this address I shall only allude to a few, in my opinion, very important matters, for the benefit of the city in General and Cook Ward in particular. Ist. I should assist to my uttermost in establishing a Harbor Board upon a basis that would work in unity with the City Council. Such a Board, I think, would be a great acquisition, and by its efforts and achievements would greatly tend to remove many excuses now advocated in other parts of the colony for removing the seat of Government from Wellington. 2nd. I should make every effort to proceed with the Te Aro reclamation upon a wise and quick reproductive system. 3rd. I would see as far as posnble that all available funds at the Council's disposal should be economically and wisely spent upon all works and improvements that would be effective in providing good roads, approaches, liberal (but equitable) laws, and the best sanitary improvements for the city, 4th. Seeing, as I do, that Cook Ward is in area larger than Thorndon, Lambton, and le Aro putTtogether, and believing also that the available outlet for pleasure, building, and other purposes, by way of Newtown, will cause Newtown requirements to multiply, and consequently will give to that neighborhood a good claim for further local representation, I am therefore of opinion that Cook Ward should be divided, and Newtown should be a separate Ward (boundaries defined), with equal powers and privileges as other Wards in the Council ; and, if elected, this is one measure I should at once endeavor to carry into effect. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, C. F. WORTH. Wellington, 25th August, 1579.
