(PER PRESS AGBNCT.) Hew Plymouth, Friday. Hall, the runaway prisoner, who was captured near Stony River by a Maori yesterday, was brought before the Distnct Court with Hinaka to-day. Hall was sentenced to two years extra penal servitude, and Hinaka to six mouths. Christchurch, Friday. Bast night a body of footballers assembled opposite the private house of Councillor Cass, who had, in his place in the Council, made some disparaging remarks regarding football and other athletic sports. They threw missiles against the home, and otherwise behaved in an uproarious fashion. ■■ Mr. Cass will take proceedings against the offenders. At the Waiau Court on Thursday Tluline Brothers wei-e fined £4OO under section 25 of the Sheep Act, for not having their sheep branded with the letter “ S.” The Pinafore Company are drawing large houses, and are well received. Chaplin and Rose Osborne open at the Gaiety on Monday. DuNBDIN, Friday. Only four bankruptcies this week—all for small amounts. Auckland, Friday. The captain and mate of the English ship Minister of Marine were committed for trial to-day on a charge of brutally ill-using a seaman during the voyage from Bondon. Ashburton, Friday. The Ijand Tax Appeal Court tor the county has been sitting for the past two days. A considerable number of appeals have been dealt with, but the reductions are trifling. The weather is splendid, and the country looks promising, and business here is rapidly reviving. Timaru, Friday.
A party of thirty to forty men still continue at work tunnelling in the snow for Smith’s and Morrison’s bodies, but so far without success. The work is one of much danger. The weather has been very favorable for young crops so far. It is now ascertained that fully 5000 sheep have been lost in the McKenzie Country, but the number will, it is supposed, eventually prove much larger.
