Dunedin, Thursday.
Three fresh informations have been laid against Chalmers Keid, for receiving money from the shareholders of the Colonial Building Society and failing to account for it. The men employed at the Walton Park colliery determined to strike against a reduction in wages, but have now altered their mind and accepted a compromise. The Dunedin footballers leave for Christchurch to-morrow.
Mr. Conyers is enquiring into some looseness in the railway management here, by which it is alleged that two trains • almost ran into one another between Dunedin and Balclutha.
A meeting of gentlemen was held in Dunedin to-day, at which it was decided to appoint a committee to canvas for subscriptions to defray the cost of sending Mr. George Grant, the local secretary, to the Sydney Exhibition to look after the interests of Otago. For obstructing the tramway H. M. Porter was fined to-day.
At a meeting of George Wilson's creditor?, held to-day, k was stated that if the land held by him for speculation purposes were sold at present it would only pay 10s in the £. T. Chalmers was again brought up charged with embezzling £S7 10s. from the Colonial Building Society. Afler hearing the evidence of the prisoner Crother, the case was adjourned until Saturday.
The City Council Chambers were crowded yesterday and to-day by visitors who inspected the exhibits proposed to be sent to Sydney. A meeting of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. The date of the show will not be fixed until after the meeting of the Jockey Club. The show will, however, work in with the race meeting. At a meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council last evening, a letter was read from the Bank of New Zealand solicitors for £4 ISs. 4d. for expenses, and asking the Council to pay up their overdraft. The bank made a demur d than an overdraft should be paid up oa 17th August, which was done to the day, and the bank here would not render an account of the amount due when asked by the Mayor, who then telegraphed to the banks solicitors for the amount, and they replied, including this £4 ISs. 4d., which was paid, the Council not knowing that legal charges were added. The Council will now proceed to recover the money. Great indignation is felt here at the bank’s action. Timaru, Thursday. On Wednesday a party from Burke's Pass proceeded to the ravine where the bodies of the men missing from Kollesby’s station were supposed to be. Four feet below the surface of snow they found the body of one of the dogs, and no doubt the men are buried there. Another party of forty left this morning to continue clearing the snow.
