BLUFF, Tuesday. The Arawata left Melbourne at 10.30 a.m. on the 15th with the Suez mall. She has 40 saloon and 90 steerage passengers on board, and 381 tons of cargo for all Iports, and four boxes containing £20.000. She arrived at the the Bluff at 2 p.m. to-day, and sailed for Dunedin at 5 p.m. She experienced fine weather during the passage. Saloon passengers : Messrs. Bennett and Hunt Mesdarnos Bennett, Heatherly, Cameron ami family (3), Miss Wood ; and 12 in the steerage; 13 Chinese.
The following vessels were in port last night;— TI.M.S. Emerald. Steamers Stella, Kiwi, Jane Douglas, Stormbird, and Grafton. Ships—Pleione, Haldono, and Pareora. Barques—Chaudiero, Loch Croe, and Beemab, Brigantine—Ned White. The steamer Tui, which left for Wanganui on Monday evening, was unable to round Terawiti on account of the north-west gale and very heavy sea. A sudden squall carried away tho staysail and split the foresail. She then put back and anchored at the Hoads till yesterday morning, when she made a start for harbor, arriving at 9 o’clock. She returned to Wanganui at 5 o’clock yesterday evening. The steamer Stormbird left Wanganui at 10 p.ra. on Monday, and arrived hero at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. She experienced fresh north-west wind to Kiipiti, sind from thence to arrival a hard galo from the same quarter, with very heavy sea. The Stormbird leaves for Foxton at 7 p.m. to-day. The steamer Manawatu, which put back from Terawiti yesterday morning, sailed again during tho evening for Wanganui. The ship Haleione spoke tho following vessels Ship Canute, from Cardiff to Callao, on the 6th Juno, 19 days out; tho Brahmin, from Java to Queenstown, on tho 10th, sent letters Home by her. Sigh:od tho ship Waimea signalling another vessel, and read her numbers.
Tho barque Edwin Bassett left Newcastle on the 2nd instant. Had calm weather for tho first seven days, and then fresh south-west wind till sighting Capo Farewell on Saturday night. Experienced light variable winds through the Strait. When off tho Heads she encountered a heavy galo from tho northwest, which took her about 15 miles to leeward. The wind had moderated a little next morning, enabling her to beat in harbor, where she arrived at 9 o’clock last night. The barque 'Western Bello, which left hero on Saturday, bound to Portland Oregon, and anchored at tho Heads, resumed her voyage at 11 o’clock yesterday morning. She would be well clear of the Strait with this wind by dusk. Tho Union Company’s steamer Taiaroa, from Picton and Nelson, is duo hero early this morning. She sails again at 2 p.m. for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. The steamer Lyttoltm, which left for Blenheim, was at anchor at die Heads all yesterday. As we anticipated yesterday, there was a good race between tho Hinomoa and Hawoa, which left tho wharf within ton minutes of each other, bound to Napier. The Government steamer accomplished the run of 200 miles in eighteen hours, thus averaging nearly twelve knots, and beating tho coastal vessel by 1 hour and 60 minutes.
The brigantine Ned White will be berthed at tho wharf to-day, and break bulk at once. The steamer St. Kllda, which sailed for Wanganui on Monday afternoon, had to anchor at tho Heads, being unable to face the north-west galo and heavy sea in the Strait. The wind moderating somewhat, she made another start yesterday ©Toning.
The steamer Kiwi left Napier at 6 p.m. on Saturday nn<i malted Gastiepoint on Sunday; got away again at 8 a.m. on Monday, c?.lled at Uroti, landed cargo, and came on to Wellington; was off the Heads at 11 o’clock and took tho brigantine Ned White in tow, and arrived in harbor at 2.30 p.m. She was again despatched to tho Heads to tow in the ship Haleione. her assistance was not required, ns the vessel nad got under way with a fair wind. She again made a start for harbor, arriving alongside tho wharf at 7 p.m. The Kiwi leaves for Castlepoint and Napier at 4 p.m to-day. ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP HALCIONE FROM LONDON. Tho sudden shift of wlnd to tho southward yesterday evening enabled tho ship Halclono, which was at anchor at Heads, to make tho harbor, where sho arrived a lato hour last night. Captain Parker, who i 3 well known in connection with tho barque X-angstono, has command of her this voyage. She has a large number of saloon and second cabin passengers, who have presented the captain with a neat illuminated tea imonial, acknowledging their gratitude to him for his kindness and readiness at promoting all kinds of amusement to relieve the monotony of a voyage of such duration Tho passengers inaugurated a series of concerts and theatrical performances twice a week, and issued a weekly paper in M.S., tho Haleione Chronicle, towards which the ladies contributed several poems, and we noticed some ably written articles by tho gentlemen. It is intended to have some copies printed to keep aa a souvenir of tho voyage. The ship has come into harbor in splendid trim, and has made a smart passage of ninety-six days from tho docks to arrival. She left tho docks on tho 17th May, Gravesend on tho ISth, landed tho pilot on tho 22nd, experienced steady winds and fine weather till picking up the north-east trades on the 31st, in 297 N. and 20*7 W • they proved light, and she lost them on tho oth June* in 955 N. and 25*4 W. Picked up the S B trades 44 miles north of tho Equator, in longitude* 22*6 west which carried her as far as 27*41 south 25*11 west on the Ist July, when sho lost them. Sho has a largo cargo of f -ion 3, about 300 tons for (bis port, and tho remainder for Auckland. Sho left New York on tho 7th April; experienced light winds and fluo weather till picking up the N. E, trades on the 24th, which lasted till tho 4th May. when she lost them in 23 53 north, 2014 west; had fine weather till crossing the Lino on tho 24th May, when she picked up tho S.E. trades, which carried her as far as IS'29 south, 29*59 west. North and north-east winds were principally met with till crossing the meridian of Oronwich on Juno 19; experienced some very bad weather, which lasted til tho Bth July, the vessel behaving very badly, sho being too light. She then had fine weather and light variable winds till arrival off tho Heads. To >k tho pilot aboard, and anchored off Barrett’s Reef at 11 a.m. on Monday; was taken in tow by tho Kiwi, and arrived here as above.
