THE NEW FIRE ESCAPE.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. • Sib, —In reference to a letter on this subject which appeared in an evening contemporary of Saturday last, I think it most deserving of consideration, and a matter which should be substantially supported. Many of the moat useful institutions are carried on by men who give their time voluntarily, and among this number, besides the fire brigades, is that of the Fire Police and Salvage Corps, who have just introduced into this colony one of the most modern and handsomely equipped in.entions of the age, and I think it nothing but fair that, should the Government and insurance offices not pay for the services of those employed, and to a certain extent risk their lives in saving the lives and property of others, should pay for the plant which is introduced into the city by those who are willing to give their time gratis. Had this machine and its appurtenances been here during the late disastrous fire a large quantity of valuable property would have been saved, and Captain Asher deserves the thanks of the public for being the means of introducing so valuable an invention. I hope, therefore, that his appeal for subscriptions will meet with the support that so deserving an object requires.—l am, &0., Ich Dien. Wellington, August 16, 1879.
