CHESS.
Two more games were added to the tourney on Wednesday evening last. The following are the five highest scores up to the present—the remaining scores will be given when the match is finished, but as the players have not played more than half the number of games, and in several instances not even that number, we defer doing so until then ; Games. Won. tost.
From the above it will be seen that Mr, Hullett has virtually won the tournament, for if he loses his last game, he will still score half a game more than any one else. We are sorry to learn that Mr. Benbow may possibly be unable to attend the “ New Zealand Chess Tournament,” which is to be com-
menced at Christchurch on the 19th of this month, on account of urgent hits!ness matters. It is to hoped that his bi.siM-.-n arrangements will not prove insurmountable, as his playing has been looked forward to in the coming contest with more than ordinary interest. Besides, in such an event Wellington would be unrepresented, and his absence, on account of his high standing in the chess world, would cause general regret at the congress.
