MR. CARRINGTON IN DEFENCE.

TO THE EDITOR ON THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —In your paper of this day’s date there is an article headed “ Mr. Carrington’s Action Condemned. From our own correspondent. New Plymouth.” You then proceed to state the wording of three resolutions passed at a public meeting held at Waitara on Monday (yesterday, the 28th instant). As one of the three resolutions only affects the public question at issue, I need here only repeat it. The resolution to which I refer is as follows :—“First —That taking into consideration the critical position of native affairs in the Taranaki district, it is of the utmost importance that the members of the House of Representatives should have united action in native matters, and should record their Totes jointly against the present Government, the members of which have as yet failed to recognise the gravity of the position.” In publishing such a resolution, would it not have been fair to have stated the very words of. the telegram sent by me to the said Waitara meeting, the receipt of which was duly acknowledged! I now therefore send you a copy, which, perhaps, together with what I have here stated, you will obligingly cause to appear in your widely-circulated and valuable paper . “Be so obliging as to inform meeting and settlers that in my opinion the action of Government in deporting natives, and thereby greatly lessening the number of fighting men, is wise and judicious, prior to the action they will shortly take. I therefore vote for Government.’’—l am, &c., ‘ Fued. A. Carrington,
