ST. PAUL’S CHURCH.

Considering the inclement s'-.'.'-e of the weather on 11th July, there was, indeed, a very largely-attended meeting of the parishioners of St. Paul’s Church —about half a dozen ladies and seventy gentlemen being present at the Church-room, Tinakori-road. The Yen. Archdeacon Thorpe occupied the chair, and in opening the meeting he desired to thank the parishioners for the cordial assistance which he had received since he came amongst them. The report and balance-sheet were read by Mr. C. P. Powles, churchwarden, and after considerable discussion, and explanation of certain items, they were adopted. As it was considered that there would be a deficit of something like £IOO to £SOO during the ensuing year, Mr. Stowe moved, and Dr. Kemp seconded, that it was desirable to get up a bazaar, and that any money which might be raised by that means should be applied in supplementing the income of the Church, and also towards defraying the ordinary fixed expenditure, and that any surplus should gr in reduction of the existing debt. Mr. Levin moved, as an amendment, and Mr. A. T. Maginnity seconded, that the new vestry should canvas the whole parish with the view of raising from £4OO to £509 by gift or debensures, to extinguish the present deficit, and that a subscription be opened in the room. The motion and amendment led to some considerable discussion, and the propriety of holding bazaars and oratorios for the purpose of raising money for the Church was criticised in all its bearings. However, the amendment was carried, and the sum of £53 was collected in the room. There was a very close contest for the office of parishioners’ churchwarden between Mr. David Anderson, jun., and Mr. Reimenschneider, who held the position for some years past. On a show of hands being called for, Mr. Anderson was declared to have 31 votes, against 26 recorded for Mr. Eeimensohneider. A division was then demanded on behalf of the latter gentleman, which, however, resulted in a majority of two for Mr. Anderson. Messrs. Levin, Quick, Reimenschneider, A. T. Maginnity, J. E. Smith, Hon. Randall Johnston, Barraud, Wilson, and Dr. Kemp were elected a vestry ; and Messrs. Halliwell and Lowe were appointed auditors. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs. Reimenschneider, Holmes, Anderson, and Barraud for the creditable manner io which they had performed their duties during the past and previous years. A cordial vote of thanks was also passed to the Yen. Archdeacon Thorpe for the manner in which he had presided at the meeting. The rev. gentleman having suitably returned thanks, clo-ed the meeting by pronouncing the benediction. We regret that pressure on our space compels us to hold over a full report of the meeting.
