(PEE PBESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. A cablegram which has been received announces that the Lyttelton Harbor Board six per cent, loan of £200,000 has bean disposed of through the National Bank at an average price of £lO2 7s. lOd. An old man named Nathaniel Stafford suffered a fracture of the skull through being pushed out of a door, and falling upon his head on the street, but the injuries are not likely to be fatal.
At Cambridgeto-day considerable excitement was caused in the Native Lauda Court by Tauherua, who violently addressed the Court on the dispute over the decision in the Okaiau case. He said that his people, the Ngatihaua, had been burning wharea and killing cattle and pigs. If a rehearing of the case was not granted, he would go up, and worse things would happen. The Court replied that his appeal had better be made to the Resident Magistrate's Court, where cognisance would also be taken of their criminal acts. Afterwards a settlement was made, and the chief was despatched to bring in the natives who had occupied the block,from Okaiau. At the native meeting to consider the petition to the Governor, Aukatere was opposed to the petition; and spoke against all land purchases, suggesting that leases should be substituted fpr sales. Ho argued that the opening - if,Strive lauds to direct purchase, and stopping the Government influence, would bring the country into constant trouble. Ho was willing to leave these matters for the Gomentand the daw to decide, and he was not a supporter of the petition, nor would he sign it. The petition to-day is in worse odor, and ’• is not likely to meet with much support. GrAHAMSTOWN, Wednesday.
The medicals officer reported to the local Board of Health that a case of scarlet fever had occurred. All necessary steps had been taken to prevent its spread a fortnight ago. The Advertiser suggests a conference of local bodies re starting the big pumps, and if legislation should be necessary, to secure the passage of an Act during the present session. Timaetj, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Timarn public school committee last evening it was decided that they should all resign, in consequence of the action of the Board of Education in refusing to appoint the candidate recommended by the committee as second master. Christchurch, Wednesday. William Hall has been committed for trial for perjury. Flowers, for cattle stealing, was remanded to Greymouth. The Southern Maori election has resulted as follows ;—Aia Tainui, 191 ; Tare Teihoha, 78; Taratene, 60. At the official declaration to-day at Kaiapoi, Tainui was declared duly elected.
The Lyttelton Times this morning announced that its ‘ proprietors had - baen served with notice of action for libel by the advertisers o£ C. S. Barker, a well-known Christchurch auctioneer. On Saturday the Times published an article reflecting on Mr. Barker in connection with the recent prosecution of Greenwood, who was tried for embezzlement while in Mr. Barker’s employ, and acquitted. The new section formed on the Canterbury railways has been denominated the Oamaru and Timaru District. W. M. Hannay, late Secretary of . Railway?, has been appointed traffic manager. The annual Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Show commenced this afternoon. The number of exhibits is about the same as last year, but the poultry were very much superior. The show is a great success. Dunedin, Wednesday. Mr. Seaton, M.H.R., leaves for Wellington early next week, and Messrs. Driver and Bastings probably about the 25th instant. Poet Chalmers, Wednesday. Messrs. William Murray and Wm. Martin Innes were the only candidates nominated today for the Mayoralty of Port Chalmers. Invercargill, Wednesday.
The nominations for the Mayoralty took place to-day. Mr. J. W. Bain, proprietor ,of the Southland Times t and Mr. G, Goodwellie, were the only candidates for the office.
