•WRECK OF THE SCHOONER DAY DAWN. News reached town on Saturday of the wreck of the schooner Day Dawn, which has been engaged in the firewood trade and in ballasting Home ships since the mil’s at'the Sound have been shut up. She left the breastwork on Thursday for Lowry Bay, took on board about 33 tons of shingle, and made a start for Wellington about 8 o'clock, but she had to run for shelter under Ward’s Island on account of tho heavy sea and the st ong north-west gale that was blowing at the time. During the night the wind Increased, and she started dragging. The second anchdr was then let go, but this failed to stop her, and about one o’clock she struck on the reefs which run out a considerable distance from the island. The heavy sea washed her clean over tho reef, and she sank a few minutes afterwards, Captain Hanzen and the two seamen landing with great difficulty on ihe island, the boat being nearly swamped several times. The wind having gone down somewhat on Friday, the crew pulled across to Kau Bay, landing there late at night. They had then to walk into town. Tho Day Dawn is a fore-and-aft'schooner of about 40 tons burthen, and belonged to Captain Cochrane. We understand she was insured for about £2OO.
