THE PRICE OF BREAD.

TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —Can you explain to me the reason why bread ia so much dearer in Wellington than it ia in Dunedin? You will see by the following extract from the Otago I Htness that bread, which is sold here at the rate of 3Jd. or 4d. the 21b. loaf, equal to 7d. or Bd. for the 41b. loaf, can be bought in Dunedin at the rate of 6d., or at the utmost, 5Jd. the 41b. loaf :—“ As an outcome of the combination entered into between the bakers to raise the price of bread to 5Jd. the 41b. loaf—or so-called 41b. loaf—a wholesale bread tactory-haa just been established by Mr. E. Hudson for the purpose of supplying the grocers with a first-class fullweight loaf, which will be sold to the public for cash at sd. A sample loaf shown us is certainly all that can be desired, and the aggrieved public will now have an opportunity of obtaining bread at once good and cheap. With the facilities for manufacturing which Mr. Hudson possesses, including a steam flour-mill on his premises, and his well-known energy, he ought to be able to hold his own against all competitors.” Any difference in cost of carriage or freight on flour to Dunedin and to this place will not, it seems to me, account for this great inequality in price. Can you throw any light on the subject, if only for the sake of gratifying the curiosity of A WORKING-MAN ? Wellington, June 25.
