A STORM IN A TEAPOT.
TO THE EDITOR Oi’ THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —It is difficult to understand what nil the virtuous indignation of our teachers is about, concerning the term “trades unionism.” Why, sir, in a debate in the House of Commons, not so many years ago, on the same subject, some very prominent members weie not afraid to characterise even such high aud mighty institutions as the Inns of Court as “ trades unions.” Teaching may be a trade, or may bo a profession ; but if the body combine for definite objects, is such combination not the same as what is called “trades unionism ”? I do not object to trades unions —quite the contrary ; but I strongly object (even when it comes from such an enlightened body as the Teachers’ Association) to Bosh. June 17, 1879.
