The Registrar-General for Ireland, reporting mi the year 1878, states that the average price of the 41b, loafin Dublin which was in 1868, was 7Jd. in 1878. Oatmeal, atthe Corn Exchange, averaged 16s. lid. per cwt. in 1868, and 17s. in 1878. Potatoes, at the potato market, 4s. 2d. to ss. sd. per cwt. in 1868, and 4s. 9d. to 7s. 6d. in 1878. Beef, at the Dublin Cattle Market, 51s. to 655. per. cwt. in 1868, and 60s. to 765. in 1878. The average number of indoor paupers in Ireland was 54,484 in 1868, and then fell gradually to 43,936 in 1876, rose a little in 1877, and advanced to 48,406 in 1878. The average number of persona in receipt of outdoor relief was 16,711 in 1868, but had risen to 31,469 in 1876, and reached 35,796 in 1878. Therefore the total number of persons in receipt of relief from the poor-rate in Ireland was 71,195 in 1868 and 75,405 in 1870, but was 84,202 in 1878. The birth-rate in 1878, which in England advanced to 35’9 per 1000 persons, and in Scotland to 35'3, declined to 251 in Ireland. The death-rate, which was 21'7 per 1000 in England, and 21'4 in Scotland, both ratios below the ten years’ average, rose to 287 in Ireland. The number of marriages showed a decline in all three kingdoms. The Registrar-General for Ireland is able to report that of the 99,839 deaths registered in Ireland in 1878, there were only 13,107, or 131 per cent., deaths of infants under one year old ; and as many as 40-551 of the deaths, or 40'6 per cent., were of persons who had attained the age of 60 years or upwards. The deaths in Ireland from the 8 principal zymotic diseases were 111 per cent, of the tatal mortality, and equal to 2’07 in every 1006 persons living. There were 856 deaths caused by smallpox, 558 of them occurring in the north and south Dublin unions. The deaths in Dublin county are stated at 26'9 per 1000, and the births at only 2S'S per 1000. The mean temperature of the year was 497 deg. at Greenwich Observatory, and 49'3 deg. at the Ordnance Survey Office, Dublin ; and the rainfall 29’2in. and 2S'o39in. respectively, the former quantity being considerably above the average, the latter a little below the average.
