Trices have a downward tendency, and a general feeling of doubt and uncertainty pervades every branch of business, to tho exclusion of all dealings except those of a strictly retail character. At tho numerous auction sales now taking place daily, goods a'o sacrificed at prices much below cost and charges, thus rendering it impossible for the legitimate trader to obtain a fair prollt in.tho ordinary course of his business. Stocks in all articles of general consumption continue heavy, and quotations nominally unaltered from our fast report, hut in most cases lower rates would be accepted for a cash line. The same remarks would net inaptly apply to colonial produce whore stocks happen to bo in excess Keg butter remains at lOd to lid, with only moderate inquiry for export coastwise. Canterbury cheese is worth 7d to 8d nominally, but at auction has pushed off at Gd; stocks very light. Bacon and hams continue scarce, no good samples being in tho market ; holders of small lots ask bld to Od per lb. Flour is said to be somewhat firmer, hut we have as yet seen no Indica. tions of a cli-uign upwards. At Piimmer, Keeves's auction it was sold at £4 10s to £3 per ton and ho ders would clear a line of first-class brands at £9 to £9 10s per ton ; Adelaide flour sold for £l3 15s per ton. Grain remains without change in value. Oats in full supply at 2s lOii to 3s per bushel; fowls'feed, i 3; 46 to 2s 7d ; maue. 4s 3d to 4s 6d: potatoes £4 i JOs to £5 per ton ; bran dull at 9d to lOd per bushel • pollard, £G to £0 5s per ton. ’ \

BY IELEORAPR. TIMARU, Friday. Hardly any change in the grain market. Wheat is firmer, oats arc very dull. Quotations : wheat 3s lOd f.0.b.; oats, 2« fid, f.0.b.; barley, 6s 6d. At the Chamber of Commerce to-day, a notice of' motion was handed In that bankrupts should resign membership. J, M. TAYLOR’S SHARE REPORT; ; ■ Wellington, June 13. 1879.

The share market continues dull, and although shares in most of the Insurance companies and banks are offered, holders decline present prices : meanwhile quotations are gradually becoming lower In consequence of the high rates of Interest offering on first-class Investments, and many of the holders of shares who may bo compelled to realise will regret the refusal of last week's rates.
