VITAL STATISTICS.
Return of the Number of Births, with the actual Mortality, and the Proportion of . Deaths to-Population, in the under-men-tioned Boroughs, during the Month of i April, 1879.
—The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded, in all cases. Of the deaths, males contributed 120; females, 69 : 91 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 48T4 per cent, of the whole number; 64 of these- were of children under 1 year of age; Zymotic diseases caused 51 deaths in April, against 48 in March ; there was a decrease in the number of these deaths in Auckland and Wellington; but an increase in Christchurch and Dunedin. Constitutional diseases caused 17 deaths in April, against 26 in March. Wellington still retains the unenviable distinction of being the most unhealthy of the fpnr chief cities of New Zealand.
