CHESS.

The second meeting of the season wan held at the club room, Panama Chambers, on Wednesday evening. We regret to say the attendance was small, bub hope this was simply due to counter attractions elsewhere, and that all intending members will put in an appearance next Wednesday night. Wo think it would be a great pity should the lovers of chess in this city fail to support their club this season as they have done hitherto. At the same time we would remind them of the support the outside public iu Christchurch give to their club. It is chiefly by this means that they have been enabled to institute the New Zealand Chess Congress, a tourney which is to he open to the whole of the players in New Zealand, and very liberal prizes are offered. We believe that the Wellington Club possesses in the person of its vice-president the best chess player in New Zealand, and who, should hs compete in the above-mentioned tourney, we further believe will return to Wellington as u champion but we would like to see three or four of the club’s best players sent to Christchurch, which might easily be done should the outside public of the Empire City give a similar support to this, “the most intellectual of all games,” as ouc sister club has received. Wellington is noted for her liberality in all things : that is the rule, therefore when she is asked there is no reason to doubt that chess will form the exception.
