The French Press attack the hesitation of the British Government to actively co-operate with the Ffehch Government in a settlement of the Greek and Egyptian questions, and attributes this to mistrust of French influence in the East. The English Press consider the complaint groundless. The week’s sales of wool amount to 67,000 bales.
The volunteering of men willing to proceed on active service in the Natal war has commenced. At Chatham and Portsmouth preparations are being made for the dispatch of further reinforcements. H. M. troop ship Euphrates is being prepared for transport service. The price of wool remains firm, and there is an active demand. Berlin, May 21. The German Government has decided to suspend the sale of its remaining stocks of silver. Melbourne, Thursday. Sailed ; Arawata, for New Zealand. Sydney, Thursday. In the Assembly last night a motion for adjournment, with the view of obtaining a commutation of the sentence of the men found guilty of raps, was negatived.
