The landing stage and all the dock estate on both sides of tho dvor are owned ami administered by a body known as the Mersey Dock and Harbor Board, which also controls tho pilots, and assesses and receives all dues of tho port. It consists of twenty-four members, all of whom are honorary in their capacity. Four are nominated by tho Conservancy Commissioners of the Mersey, and tho other twenty are elected by the dock ratepayers. Despite tho variety of interests involved, and the immensity of the trust, no scandalous charge has ever been brought against the administration, which is solely for tho benefit of the port and the country. Tho value of tho estate Is about one hundred million dollars, and the income is about five mil ion dollars annually. Tho docks extend for more than six miles in a continuous line, and comprise about four hundred and twenty acres—two hundred and fifty-five acres, with eighteen miles of quay margin, being on tho Liverpool side, and one hundred and sixty‘fivo acres, with nine miles of quay margin, on tho Birkenhead side of the river. The total quay margin alongside of which ships can bo moored is twenty-seven miles, and every quay is built of solid masonry, granite being tho conomonest material. Tho dry or graving docks are also formed of in sonry. and a large iron steamer enclosed in one. with her Titanic proportions fully revealed, is a sight to remember. The quays are all covered by substantial sheds or warehouses, those of the new corn dock being ten stories high, with a collar below the water level. The corn is conveyed from the vesso 1 by hvdraullc machinery into tho cellar, which is rat-proof and watertight, and thence it is raised by an elevator, at tho rate of ten t *ns a minute, to tho parts of the building prepared for its storage—the capacity of tho warehouses being about one hundred and sixty-flyc thousand quart-rs.— Harper's Weekly.
