CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. In the import market during the past week tram actions in most lines have been of a most restrictr tl nature, and have been conQned to the purchase 0 ( goods for pressing requirements. The evident rclr >c j_ nnce of traders to increaso engagements is met by the merchants with an extra amount of caution in ms' kiDrsales, not only as to amount, but as to selecth , n 0 f marks. The bitter experience of the past few m onths is undoubtedly beginning to teli, and it would , have been well if the same rigid conditions that j 10 w obtrude themselves on the consideration of ir nporters when parting with goods had been acted upor i months and months ago. There is little change to report In the grain market. During tho week transao lions have boon more limited than usual Wheat in small parcels has changed hands at 3s 2d to'Ss 3d f» jt ordinary to fair samples, and 3s 4d to 3s 5d for g( jod milling and seed samples. The continued unsettf led state of
the English market has almost stopped sales for these. In flour but little business Is doing. Town brands are still quoted at £8 5s : best lines ol country brands are to be had at considerably less. Oats continue very doll. Large sales are reported from Southern districts. Locally, sales have been made at 2s 2d to 2s 3d for feed quality, and 2s id for milling. Barley has experienced a sharp decline—best samples, 6s. Potatoes ere in fair demand at 55s to 57s Od, bat farmers do not care to part with them at these figures. Butter and cheese are without alteration. Hams and bacon are not quite ready for export yet-
