' Stn.-j-Will you oblige by inserting thefollowing in your valuaable and widely circulated journal : The inhabitants of Tory-street being ratepayers have cause to complain of the disgraceful state of that part of the street from Barber's corner to 'Buckle-street, which is sinbply ankle-deep in mud, and not a crossing in the .whole streeth-rnts sufficient to break the springs of any vehicle going at an ordinary snail’s pace. . '• The ,two Mount-Cook Schools are in this ■neighborhood, and it is pitiable to see the poor children wading through the slush, and having to stop for hours at sohobl literally'covered in mud. I ; :

’ The writer is informed that this part of the street has never been thoroughly 1 metalled. -Would it not be wise and saving to the ratepayers if the City Surveyor would recommend the proper making of the street, instead of the miserable patching occasionally done ? ' Messrs Carpenter, Maginnity, Allen, and Fisher deprecate the laying but of any money on Mount Cook Ward—as an argument they say that the rates of favored Thorndon would be applied. I should like to know from whom it may concern how much weekly • money is spent on cleaning the streets and keeping them in repair in Thorndon and Lambton-quay, as against Mount Cook War’d.'—l am, &C., '
