VITAL STATISTICS.
Return of the Number of Births, with the actual Mortality, and the Broportioh of Deaths to Bopulation, in the under-men-tioned Boroughs, during the Month of April, 1879.
—The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases. Of the deaths, males contributed 120; females, 69 : 91 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of. age, being 43T4 per cent, of the whole number ;• 64 of these were of children nnder 1 year of-age. * Zymotic diseases caused 51 deaths in April, ,-j against 48 in March ; there was a decrease in . the number of these deaths in Auckland and , Wellington, but an increase' in Christchurch and Dunedin. Constitutional diseases caused : 17 deaths in April, against 26 in March. - "Wellington still retains the unenviable dis- J tinction of being the most unhealthy of the four chief cities of New Zealand. ’
