SYDNEY EXHIBITION.

The following is a letter from the secretary to the International Commission, dated Sydney, April Bth, 1879, addressed to Dr. Hector, as Executive Commissioner of the New Zealand Commission ;

ft Sir, —I have the honor to invite the attention of the New Zealand Commission for the Sydney International Exhibition to the circular issued by the Committee on Art with the sanction of this Commission, and of which copies are forwarded. _ , “ The committee is, most anxious that the whole of the colonies shall be well represented in its department, not only by the works of those who desire to compete for the awards of the Commission, bat also by those works of art which the wealth and taste of their Commissioners have accumulated. These last, I apprehend, can only be obtained from the owners on loan. •

“The Commission has agreed to collect from owners residing. in this, colony acknowledged works of art, and to pay the cost of the transport of the same to and from the Sydney Exhibition, and to insure, them against damage or loss by fire, or otherwise, at values to be agreed upon. It is. proposed to forward these works on "the same terms to the Melbourne Exhibition. : - - ■ ■■ - ■■■.;.■■

“ I am instructed to ask your Commission to endeavor to send to this Exhibition a display of paintings and other works of art worthy of New Zealand.

“ I may remark the Royal Commission for the Philadelphia Exhibition collected and sent to America £200,000 worth of paintings at its own cost for packing, carriage, freight, insurance, &.C., and that the whole damage which the insurance companies had to pay did not exceed £35. So ale* the Royal Commission for the Paris Universal Exhibition sent the magnificent and valuable collection of works of art shown there, fully insuring them against sea and all other risks, from the time the owners gave them up until they again received them. The committee will he glad to hear, through you, such information as may enable it to form calculations with regard to the art contributions from New Zealand.—l am, <tc.,

(Signed) “ Augustus Morris, “ Secretary. “Dr. Hector, C.M.G., Wellington.”
