VITAL STATISTICS.
The following table shows the number of births, the actual mortality, and the proportion of deaths to population in the boroughs _ of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hokitika, and Invercargill, during the month of March, 1879: —
The births were 21 more than in February, 1879. The deaths were 21 less in number than the deaths in February, 1879. Of the deaths, males contributed 87; females, 64 : 84 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 55'63 per cent, of the whole number ; 65 of these were of children under 1 year of age. There were 9 deaths of persons over 65 years of age, viz., 2 males of 66 and 79 and 1 female of 70 at Auckland ; 1 male of 79 at Thames ; 2 males of 73 and 84 at Dunedin ; 1 female of 68 at Christchurch; 1 male of 65 and 1 female of 70 at Wellington.
