George Collins was charged with obtaining a passage surreptitiously on board the steamer Albion from Lyttelton to Wellington. Prisoner pleaded guilty; The, master of the steamer said that stow.' away a were getting very frequent on the coast of late. . His Worship fined the prisoner, £3, ■or in default to be imprisoned for four weeks. AN AMATEUR DETECTIVE. 1 ;* 'j ' -J John O’Connell was charged; by/Thomas Hodgins, lessee of the Shamrock 'Hotel, Molesworth-street, with obtaining money’to'the amount of £3 10s. by means of false representations. -• V-' .. txty.CU Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Thomas Hodgins, lessee of the Shamrock Hotel, stated that last Saturday hight , ’pn‘soner came to his hotel and entered Into conversation relative to the banks being closed. Prisoner then led witness ta believe that he was a detective, and that on Saturday he bad a great difficulty to get admission-Into the Bank of New Zealand, • but on telling the manager that he wished to find some particulars about a supposed forged cheque; on the name of Ready-money Robinson, of Christchurch, the bank manager admitted . him. From prisoner’s representations witness lent him some money. ■; , . James Ryan, a draper’s assistant, was called as a witness by the police, but he . spoke la such a low mumbling manner; that, the reporters could not hear a word he said. Detective Sullivan said that from information receivedhe arrested the prisoner. - His Worship : thought the case was not fully made out. Ghatfield, claim £BBl2a. .fid; ;i o’i Gwinneth v. Davies.— Claim £3 35,, for work done in connection with certain survey plans. Mr. Oilivier appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Chapman for the defendant. The plaintiff was non-suited. . John McLean v. James Jayi—Claim £lO 7s. Mr. Stafford appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Cntteu for the defendant. -It appeared that the plaintiff had a contract "from the Gorporation to form a certain part of Dixon-street. Defendant had another” contract, and obtained leave from plaintiff to make a cutting through his . (plaintiff’s) part of the contract. . It waslunderatood .that tius.rcpttplg was to have, been filled by defendant;-.This-had not been done. F. A, Krull v.F. Vallentine.—Claim £IOO. Mr. Travers appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Quick for the defendant. The plaintiff alleged that the money was lent; defendant contended that it was a bonus. After hearing evidence, his Worship gave judgment for plaintiff for the amount claimed and Costs.
