RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Friday, February 14. One inebriate for being drunk and disorderly was discharged. CIVIL CASES. H. Czcrwonlca v. G. Beere, claim £33 12s. Mr. Ollivier appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. \V. L. Travers for the defendant. Plaintiff deposed that he was employed by the defendant to do certain work in connection with preparing plans for town belt sections. It was agreed that witness was to receive 12s. per day for office work and £1 Is. for field work. Witness had repeatedly asked defendant for the money, and was told by him that he had received the money from the City Council In cross-examination plaintiff said that defendant supplied materials, instruments, &c. Defendant stated that the agreement was 12s. a day and £1 per day for field work. After plaintiff had undergone a lengthy crossexamination from Mr. Ollivier, the case was further adjourned until Monday next. A TRUMPERY CASE. G. M. Sellars was charged on the information of Edwin Stafford with stealing two curtains, one pole, two window blinds, and one coal scuttle, complainant’s property. Mr. Travers appeared for the prosecutor, and Mr. Ollivier defended. The case was such a trumpery one that complainant’s solicitor, after hearing some little evidence, withdrew from the case. Accused was discharged. EMBEZZLEMENT, E. H. Beere, on remand, was charged with embezzling the sum of £133 25., the money of Henry Czerwonka and others. There was only one additional witness examined, when the case was further adjourned until 14th March. New Zealand Times Co. v. E. J. Bevis. — Claim, £6 15s. Mr. Edwards appeared for the plaintiff. Defendant did not appear, and judgment was given by default for the plaintiffs for the amount claimed and costs.
