CITY COUNCIL.
The Council sits to-morrow evening. The following is the Order Paper :—Deputatien from Wellington Volunteer Fire Brigade re night watchman and fire signals ; to report city valuation, 15th January, 1879 ; report of Wharf Committee ; report of Water Works Committee ; report of Public Works Committee ; report •£ Drainage Committee ; tenders—metalling and formation of sundry streets ; accounts. NOTICES OP MOTION. Councillor Maginnitt to move (adjourned), —“ That the time has arrived for letting the Queen’s Wharf by public auction for a period of three years.” Councillor Thompson to move, —“ That the opinion of Mr. Buckley and Mr. Ollivier, relative to the legality of the payment of member* of the Wharf Sub-Committee, be laid on tho table." Councillor Fisher to move, —“ Whereas tha deed of agreement between the Corporation and the Wellington City Tramway Company provides—‘That so long as the undertaking shall be used and enjoyed by the promoters, their executors, administrators, or assigns, they shall pay to the Corporation, on the last day of each year, a sum equal to £lO per centum, computed upon the net profits realised by the promoters, their executors, administrators, or assigns, for the use and enjoyment of tho undertaking.’ And whereas it is further provided— ‘ That so long 9s the business of the undertaking shall be carried on by the promoters, their executors, administrators, or assigns, the Corporation shall be at liberty, at such intervals as they shall think fit, by any person whom they shall appoint for that purpose, to inspect all books of account which shall be kept by the promoters, their executors, administrators, or assigns, of their receipts, disbursements, and transactions in connection with the undertaking.’ That in fulfilment of the terms of agreement above recited tho Tramway Company be requested to furnish the Corporation with a statement of receipts and disbursements for the term ending with the year 1878." Councillor Thompson to move, —“ That instructions be given to the City Surveyor te have the whole of the open drain running parallel with Kent-terraoe covered over.” The following is the PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The committee beg to reportr-1. That a claim for compensation has been made by a Mrs. Hedges on account of damages sustained by her falling down the cutting in Willis-stmt,
but that by the terms of the contract tho contractor is liable for all such damages. 2. That Mr. Mace’s claim for remission of rates on Scarborough-terraco cannot bo granted. 3. An application having been made for the free use of water to a private school, the committee cannot recommend that it be to in such cases. 4. That in reply to a petition from the express drivers, the committee do not consider it expedient to prevent haclcney carriages from carrying passengers’ luggage, _ 5. That the cost of Port Chalmers stone kerking is too expensive for adoption by the Corporation. 6. That a water service to Green-street, Adolaide-road, has been authorised. The committee beg further to recommend—7. That Eiddiford-street be formed and metalled, so as to allow the continuation of the tramway, on the Tramway Company undertaking to carry out the said continuation ; estimated cost, £BOO. 8. That the portion of the Kent-terrace drain already formed, with sides and bottom—viz,, 429 ft.—be also covered in ; estimated cost, £3OO. 9. That Holland - street be drained ; estimated cost, £35. 10. That portion of the Te Aro stream, at the back of the brewery, be covered in to the extent of 200 ft.; estimated cost, £l2O. 11. That the Gas Company have license to occupy tho portion of the Te Aro foreshore adjoining their property, and that the City Council agree to sell the same to them on tho same terms as the adjoining sections may be sold, so soon as they are in a position to do so. 12. That tho Terrace footpath, in the neighborhood of the new Scotch Church, be kerbed, channelled, and gravelled. 13. That accounts, amounting to £1273 ISs. 4d., * bo passed for payment.
