A furious nor*-wo3i gale was blowing in port yesterday, hot fortunately was attended by no very serious result?. The vessels lying at the Gladstone pier were, of course, exposed to the full fury of the gale, the squalls at times being terrific. The Hydaspes had her main channel smashed, through being blown over on one of the pile heads at the wharf, while the Eangitikei, we are sorry to say, faredsoinewhat worse. One of the plates of her bulwarks forward was dented in anil split by contact with a pile head, while one of her deck ports wa3 torn away, and another badly bent up. The vesiel sustained no damage below the covering board, but a small portion of her main rail was carried away on the outside. The other vessels were not injured In any way. It would be well if the Harbor Board would provide for and aft fenders outside the fender piles, and a little below the wharf, as this would be tha means of saving vessels, from being injured in a nor'-west gale while lying alongside the Gladstone pier. The fenders put over the ships' sides, of coui se, move up and down with the ship, but were they snsponded from the piles, their utility would be greatly increased. The Harbor Master and his staff were on the alert daring Uie day, and thanks to their vigilance there was no other casualty.— Lyttellon Timts, December 28. '__
