(ItBBTER'S SPECIAL TO PRESS AOENOV.) Melbourne, Monday. The Canterbury cricketers won the match against Ballarat by eight wickets. The Chief Secretary and Professor Pearson departed on Saturday on their embassy to London. There was no demonstration on their departing. The English Eleven in their first innings scored 331. The Victorian Fifteen in their second innings scored 211. The match was drawn for want of time to play it out. The mail steamer Assam will reach here en Friday. Sidney, Monday. The barque Gazelle, from the Solomon Island?, brings the captain and two of the crew of the Onward. The Commissioners, with Jennings as Executive Commissioner, have been appointed for tho International Exhibition. An Evening News telegram states that the steamer Mecca, with 350 Chinese for tho A.S.N. Company, was wrecked in Torres Strait. The cargo was lost, but the crew were saved. SPECIAL TELEGRAM. Melbourne, Monday. It is doubtful if the New Zealanders will play East Melbourne on Wednesday, owing to the races.
Vulcan is the favorite for the Champion Stakes at 7to 2 j Wellington next. Averniss ia favorite for the two-year-old race.
