THE AGGREGATE AUSTRALIAN BANKING BALANCE-SHEET.

(From the Australian Insurance and Banicing Record.) In another column we present a summary of the returns to 30th September, 1877, of the whole of the banka engaged in business in Victoria, New South Wales, New Zealand, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania. From, this compilation it appears that the banks' total liabilities in the six colonies amount to £56,056,190, the assets to £79,567,055. If the balances to and from the banks inter se are eliminated, the account as between the banks and the public would stand as in the following comparison, which also affords a contrast with the banks condition twelve months ago.. Thus ; SOtbSopt., 30th Sept., i ncreaso . Liabilities .. £33,520,000 £55,307,000 £1,877,000 Assets.. .. 70.355,000 75.015,000 6,500,000 tween assets 10,83-1,000 20,548,000 3, 1 14,000 and liabilities (supplied by banks). - Advances by tbe banks (which include Government securities, &c., held) show a large expansion in the twelve months, and contrast thus 30th Sept., 1377. 30th Sept- 1878. We trust that our summary table, which is the . most comprehensive ever published in regard to Auatralion banking, will be acceptable to onr readers.
