DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT THE UPPER HUTT.
Early on Christmas" morning a destructive fire occurred at the Upper Hutt. • About two o'clock a house occupied by ana we behove belonging to Mr. Goorgo Brown was discovered to be on fire, and the alarm was speedily given. It would appear that the inmates of the building were fast asleep, and unconscious of .the fire until thp flames had got very firm hold. Mr. Brown, and his son only escaped with their lives with great difficulty. In endeavoring to get ont they were both very severely burned, and are now undergoing medical treatment by Dr. Wilford. The building and its contents were wholly destroyed, and, unfortunately for Mr. Brown, he was not insured for a farthing, i The damage is estimated at £7OO, and we hear that £IOO worth of notes were destroyed. As to the cause of tho firo nothing more is known than that it originated in the back of the house. Three-quarters of an hour prior to the alarm being_ given Constable Lyster passed by the buildings but ohserved nothing wrong. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. Brown, who is one of the old settlers of the district. '
