(PER press agency.) Auckland, Thursday. The races were largely attended, aud every event was well contested. The weather was fine, with the exception of light showers. In this order the grand-stand was passed the second time. Outside the cutting Ariel took the lead from Punga, Lady Elizabeth being second, but she bolted, losing her chance. Howe brought Gillie Callum forward in splendid style. Matthews, however, rattled Ariel along, keeping the lead past the post, and winning by two lengths ; Gillie Callum second, a good length ahead of The Don; Punga, Lady Elizabeth, Elsa, and Omega following home in the order named. Time, 4miu. 21sec. Betting: 6 to 1 agat Ariel, 3 to 1 agst Punga, Elsa, and Gillie Callum, 4 to 1 agst Lady Elizabeth, 5 to 1 agat The Don. HANDICAP HURDLE RACE.
