THE AUCKLAND RACES.
(PER press agency.) Auckland, Thursday. The races were largely attended, aud every event was well contested. The weather was fine, with the exception of light showers. RAILWAY PLATE Pinfire .. .. .. .. ..1 Walters’, colt Slander .. . . ... 2 Isaac Walton 3 After two unsuccessful attempts a capital start was effected, .which resulted in one of the best races ever witnessed on the course. Walters’ colt led from the starting post, Isaac Walton following, with Piufire third, aud Xantippo last. This order was retained through the cutting aud iuto the straight to the dip, when Pinfiro came forward with a tremendous rush, winning cleverly. "AUCKLAND CUP HANDICAP, Of 300 sovs, with a sweepstake of 15 sovs each added; second horse to receive 30 sovs out of the stakes. Distance, two and a quarter miles. Ariel .. 1 GUlie Callum 2 The Don.. .. .. 3 The horses got away to a splendid start, and passing the stand ran in a heap, Punga being the first to lead off, followed by Lady Elizabeth, Ariel third. In this order the grand-stand was passed the second time. Outside the cutting Ariel took the lead from Punga, Lady Elizabeth being second, but she bolted, losing her chance. Howe brought Gillie Callum forward in splendid style. Matthews, however, rattled Ariel along, keeping the lead past the post, and winning by two lengths ; Gillie Callum second, a good length ahead of The Don; Punga, Lady Elizabeth, Elsa, and Omega following home in the order named. Time, 4miu. 21sec. Betting: 6 to 1 agat Ariel, 3 to 1 agst Punga, Elsa, and Gillie Callum, 4 to 1 agst Lady Elizabeth, 5 to 1 agat The Don. HANDICAP HURDLE RACE. Finn 1 Eversley 2 mitefoot 3 Four started ; Agent was scratched. Perfume was favorite, but fell at the sixth hurdle. Jonathan Wild also started, but bad no chance. MAIDEN PLATE. Pinfiro .. .* I Fiction ~ .. .. 2 Repo 3 This was a fine race, Pinfiro being hard pushed, aud winning by a length; Repo a good third,
