In an article advocating a reduction in the railway fares charged generally, and the introduction of daily or season tickets at lower rates,. the Souikland Times remarks :—" On ordinary days of the week a return ticket for a distance of under 25 miles avails only for the day of issue, and to take the advantage of a full day at his destination and stay a night with his friends is thus denied to the holder. Where is the reasonableness of such a restriction, and why should a passenger over 2i miles of railway be on a worse footing than one who travels 50 miles ? If it is desirable to offer special inducement to travel the larger distance, is it not equally desirable to hold out • temptation to travel the BmaUer % In each case the railway derives a benefit and the public is accommodated. Then the limit for use of a return ticket, say from Invercargill to Dunedin, is six days. Why bix days only ? Why should not the railway bid for travellers who would take a cheap ticket, if allowed a month for return, or three months! It cannot be of the slightest importance to the department at what particular date it performs the service for which the price of a return ticket is the equivalent." In England, Europe, and America the reform here indicated has long been desired, and in this town the system of tickets to be bought anywhere and used at any time is in vogue on the city tramway. Why should it not be adopted elsewhere ! If the railway sta:ion be shifted into a more central position, and the rail- * ' imway enter into competition ior passengers, the necessity that will then arise of studying the convenience of their fares may induce the railway authorit ioa *« imitate the practice of their rivals in reg; the sale of tickets and the length of time during which they are available."
