- {nwM -a oonnaoroHoaMT). - Carterton, Saturday. There was a nomination of candidates for the County Council in room of Booth, jun., resigned, to-day. Bennett, of the Wairarapa Guardian, Armstrong, the auctioneer, and Braithwaite, a settler, were nominated. A poll will take place on Saturday. Tauranga, Sunday. Mr. Keen, mate of the steamer Roweua, fell overboard and was drowned whilst off Capo Colville last night. Nelson, Saturday. The City Council decided unanimously to decline the Government proposals with respect to the question of charitable aid. Christchurch, Saturday. Frank Valpy, late a clerk in the Steward of Reserves office, Christchurch railway, was arrested last evening on a warrant, charged with embezzling the sum of £6 45., though it was stated the amount of his defalcations was £l6 ss. He was brought up this morning and remanded till Tuesday. Ddnedin, Sunday.

The Rev. R. Fitohett has left for Melbourne, to be ordained to deacons’ orders in the Church of England. He will probably be appointed to All Saints’ Church.

A mounted cavalry corps is to be formed in Dunedin. About sixty gentlemen have enrolled their names for that purpose, Mr. A. J. Tawsey, who is about to leave for Europe, was yesterday presented by a number of friends with a purse of 100 sovereigns, as a mark of their regard for him, socially and professionally. In reply, he said he hoped that he would return to Dunedin shortly and encourage the cultivation of music more than had hitherto been done.

Westport, Saturday. The men employed on the Government work of cutting a new channel in the Duller River are paid eighteen-pence per hour, and are working ten hours daily, the engineer being anxious to get the work completed. When the channel is finished small steamers will get up the river several miles further than is now possible.
