Seager and Co., of this city, mado her trial trip round the Auckland harbor on tho 14th Instant. The following report of tho vessel is from the Now Zealand Herald, of the 18th instant, and may bo of Interest:—The announcement in our columns that the abovo new iron steamer would take a turn down the harbor.on Saturday afternoon was tho means of inducing a large number of tho friends of tho builders to bo present, and when tho appointed hour arrived for her to move off from tho wharf there were not fewer than Beventy ladles and gentlemen on board, who thoroughly enjoyed the two or three hours' steaming with which they wore favored. No sooner had the steamer got under way than It was seen that she answered tho holm admirably, corning round in almost her own length, while the vibration of tho machinery could scarcoly bo felt. In these respects she fully realised the expectations of her designers. It wovhowevor, apparent soon after starting that some difficulty'would be experienced in working up to the required pressure of steam, 801 b, as the fire-bars were constructed to burn Newcastle coal, whereas another kind was med, and this, in conjunction with tho stiffness of tho machinery, combined to militate against her doing tho measured milo in the time she really ought to do It in, and which the builders aro confident sho will accomplish, viz., nine knots per hour. With a pressure of 721 b of steam she did the mile in eight minutes, and from this it is evident that with the necessary working power of steam a greater speed than tho trial run will be attained. Tho steamer la to the order of Messrs Soagar and Co., of Wellington, and Is intended ro run from that port to Wanganui and back, with passengers and cargo; and so far as finish and workmanship are concerned, there is nothing left to be desired. Her neb tonnage Is 107, and gross 139, and sho was built from the design 91 2f «es» Sims sal Bjowa by Mr Yeoman, wiio eub-ltt

contracts for the machinery and other parts to the various Arms hereafter mentioned. Tho dimensions of the hull, constructed by Mr Yeoman, are as follows :—lloft koel, 16ft beam. BJft depth of hold. The frame is of the most substantial character, viz., 2iin, with keel-plate of J, and garboard-streak and bottom above turn of bilge, 5-lGths; shear utrake, g; and sides J-inch of best Staffordshire longlengths, varying from lift to 14ft. Tho kelson consists of two 3i-liich by i-inch angle iron, and the two nlster kelsons of 3J-inch by j-inch T iron. The hull Is divided by six water-tight bulkheads, and the space Is utilised as follows:—No. 1 section as forecastle ; N 0.2, steerage and fore-cabin: No. 3, main hold ; No. 4, machinery; No. 5, ladies' cabin; and tho remainder as after-hold. The boiler is a two-furnaced multitubular of the usual return tube class, and is Tift in diameter. B}ft long, with furnaco 2ft 4in in (llamctor. the shell being f plate, double-rivetted. The machinery is of tho most modern kind, highly finished, and made by Messrs. Macoflold and Co.; and the engine is a high-pressure compound, surface-con-densing, of 25 nominal horse-power. The hlgh-pres-iiiuro cylinder is 13 inches, and the low-pressure 23 inches, with a 15-inch stroke. The accommodation for passengers is really excellent, and in this respect she will hold her own with any boat of her size on the coast, while tho finish thereof is such as will please tho most fastidious. The total passenger room Is 41), with sleoping berths for 30. The after-cabin is not apart for tho ladles, and is finished in similar style to tho main saloon, which Is situated amidships, and lias 12 sleeping berths, besido the usual "shakedowns," which can be mado up at a push. The interior of this department and that for the ladies is very neat and taste;ully furnished, the panels being dono in blrds'-eye maple, relieved by oak and cedar mouldings, while the ceiling is wliito and gold. The upholstery, by Mossrs. Winks and Hall, is crimson plush, with curtains to match, and as there is abundant ventilation by tho aid of side ports and largo skylights, it will be seen that no expense has been spared by the owners to make the accommodation as comfortable and attractive as possible. The foro-cabln contains eight sleeping berths, panelled end moulded in oak. with plonty of ventilation, and Is a very comfortable apartment. The ofllcors' quarters are abaft the saloon an the starboard side, while the galley and pantry are opposite, and so arranged that access to the saloon is had without interfering with the comfort of tho passengers. Tho whole of tho woodwork, outfit,. rigginf, spars, boats, &c, wero contracted for by Messrs. Sims and Brown, while the Joiner-work of the cabins was sub-let to Mr. Trevarthan, and finished In such a manner as to meet with the approbation of the senior owner, who has been present and watched the construction of the vessel from its initiation. The steamer is fitted with a repeating telegram, made by Messrs. Branston and Forster, which we understand is the first of the kind made in tho colony, and so admirably did it act on Saturday, that wo hope ore long to sea every coastal cteamer supplied with one. For the quick despatch of loading and unloading, a donkey engine is stationed on dock, and from this and other small details about the vessel it is evident that the proprietors have spared no expenso in the outfit of the steamer, and we trust that the trade upon which she is about lo enter will prove remunerative, and recoup the owners for tho large outlay they have Incurred. Mr, Jobson, the Government Inspector, was present during the trip, nnd expressed himself satisfied with the working and finish of the machinery, and also the goneral outfit of tho vessel, and he will grant the necessary certificate forthwith. The Huia sailed for Wellington on the 17th, under the command of Captain Holmes, formerly of the s.s. Napier. THE HERMIONE. The following addresses wore presented by tho Hormlone's passengers:— "To Captain Roberts and officers of the ship Hermiono,—We, tho undersigned emigrants, feel the greatest pleasure in returning thanks to Captain Roberts and officers for their care and kindness to us during our passage from England to New Zealand in the ship Hormione. Truly may we say with all the sincerity of our hearts that they have been more than efficient in their duties, and we trust they shall bo long spared to go many prosperous voyages. Signed by 82 passengers," " To our surgeon-BUperintendent, Dr. Hugh Marriner, —We, the undersigned emigrants, cannot find words adequate to express our thanks for your attention and paternal care, and we feel happy to say you have displayed a zeal in your duties seldom surpassed, and we rest assured you shall bo rewarded for such, both spiritually and temporarily. We all join in wishing you a long and happy life. Signed by 83 passengers." ■" To the matron, Mrs. Baillie,—We feel a separation from one of such amiable qualities. You have always met us with a smiling countenance. Yet yon shall lire in our memory and be dearly cherished there as one worthy of the highest esteem. Wo all join in wishing you a long life and all the pleasures I this earth can afford. Signed by 82 passengers."
