MISS AMY SHERWIN’S CONCERT.
The well-merited fame which this talented vocalist earned for herself at her former concert, given in tho Opera House about three weeks since, and thesuccess which has attended her tour through the South, were the means of securing for her ft large and fashionable auchence at the Royal last night. The programme was rather a diversified one, the curtain being raised to the petite comedy “ Who Speaks First, in which Mr. J. P. Hydea sustained the character of Captain Thomas. Mi&s Alice Johns* Mrs. Militant was very creditably rendered. To this succeeded the concert portion of the programme, which had evidently been carefully arranged, and which was a great musical treat to all, but especially to those who had not the pleasure of hearing her on her former visit. Miss Sherwin has a sweet though powerful soprano voice of wonderful compass, and which in the higher notes filled the theatre to reverberation. Her appearance before the lights brought forth warm acclamations from all parts of the house. The main feature of the evening was the mad scene from “ Lucia, which apart from its grand vocalisation was remarkable for the.thorough dramatic firei and pathos in which it was represented. When in the heighth of her frenzy the effect was so magnificent that the audience seemed electrified, and at its conclusion she was greeted with applause of some minutes duration. in response to an encore, Miss Sherwin gave i “ Kathleen Mavourneen” with exquisite sweetness and depth of feeling. A duet between Signor Pompei and Miss Sherwin from “ The Barber of Seville’* was well rendered and very amusing. The Signor possesses a rich basso voice well adapted to comedy. The laughable farce of “ Nursey duckweed, in which Miss Amy Thornton made here first appearance in Wellington, brought the programme to a close.
