A deputation recently waited on the Minister for Works in favor of a new route for the proposed line from Sydney to the north. A survey was promised in answer to the request of the deputation, but it was coupled with the following proviso about providing guides for the surveyors, which seems worthy of imitation. The Evening News reports that Mr. Sutherland said, “ It would be necessary for the deputation to provide guides for the surveyors. This the deputation promised to do, and they named Mr. Close, of Morpeth, and Mr. James Price, The deputation thanked the Minister for his courtesy and his satisfactory reply." From Christchurch we hear of the first application yet made to walk the hospital. The application was received on the 2nd instant, and the Globe commenting on the fact says:— u Any suggestion that may lead to an extension of the hospital’s usefulness will, we are certain, be received in the same spirit in which it is offered, so we say, with all due diffidence, that there cannot now be any reason why it should not serve as a school as well as an hospital; Without knowing anything at all about this particular student, we may safely say that if the system is introduced, it will lead to the rearing up, by our own motion, of a class in which the community is sadly deficient. The mere leading of students round the hospital certainly will not make physicians and surgeons, but it will give that experience at home which has now to be sought abroad.”
