NEW ST. PETER’S CHURCH.
At a meeting of the St. Peter’s Church building committee, held the other evening, the plans for the church were approved, and tenders for the work av© to be called for immediately. The building will be of the decorated gothic style, and without doubt will be tho handsomest structure of its character in Wellington. The front elevation is to be ou Willia-atreeb, from which there are to be three or four entrances, and one from Ghuznee-street, a highly ornamental tower rising up from the corner of tho streets, and attaining a height of 116 feet. Over the main entrance there are to be three two-light windows grouped together, the central one being 17 feetbigb, with smaller ones on each side to match. Tho interior of the church seems to be admirably arranged. It is cruciform, with double transepts, side aisles, and navo. The nave is to be 70ft. by 25ft.Gin., the side aisles lift, transept SOfb.by loft. Cm., the chancel 35ft- by 35ft. Gin., and there are in addition organ chamber, choir stalls for forty-eight singers, choir vestry, and clergyman’s vestry; the extreme area of the building being l-10ft. by 80£t. Trero are also galleries. It is calculated the building will seat comfortably cloven hundred persons. From the nature of tho specifications tho interior of the church will bo handsome in appearance, but not in auy way approaching gaudinesa. It may be added that the tower is to be fitted with a chime of bells. The original design was by tho late Mr. Grosholz, but since his lamented death Mr, Turnbull has worked out the plan, subject to some modifications directed by tho building committee.
