TARANAKI RACES.
(PER PRESS AGENCY.) New Plymouth, Thursday,
The Taranaki races commenced to-day. The weather was wet in the early part of the day but cleared about noon. A large number of persona were present. The meeting was a success. HANDICAP lIIJHDLE BACK. Mr Mclvor's Grey Momus, lOst 121 b (Owner) .. X Mr J, Campbell's Bully-for-You (Potts) .. ..2 Messrs Palmer and Edwards’ Awabou (Edwards).. 3 War Eagle, Little-thought-of, and Billy also ran. Betting: 6to -1 agst Grey Momus, 2 to 1 agst Bully-for-You and AwahoU, 5 to 1 agst War Eagle, 10 to 1 agst the others. The meeting opened well, as all on the card sported silk. The horses got off well at the first attempt. Grey Momus, Awahou, and Little-thought-of came into the straight run in the order named; the others followed close up. On talcing the top corner Bully-for-You raced into second place, and from this point all interest was centred in the two leaders, it being clear that none of the others stood a chance of beating the pair. The two kept close together, but Grey Momus, being ridden well, always had the best of the struggle, and eventually won by a length and a half, rather easily. All the horses jumped well—not a baulk at any of the hurdles. Time, Imin. 26sec.
MAIDEN PLATE, Mr Vavasour’s Jocasta .. Mr J. I’aul’s Chanticleer ..
Mr J. Bay's Forest Queen .. 3 Taxation, Marion, and Catchem also ran. Forest Queen was declared 61b. over Jocasta. Betting : 2 to I agst Chanticleer, 5 to 1 agst Taxation, and 10 to 1 agst the others. All started well together, Chanticleer jumping off with a strong lead, Marion, Jocasta, and Forest Queen following in the order named. These positions remained unaltered for a complete round of the course, when Jocasta raced up to the leader's girths, and the two favorites raced away from the others. Vavasour’s mare got on level terms with Chanticleer in rising the hill) and Paul’s horse came into the straight run with a" slight lead, but half way up the distauoe the mare got fairly iu front, was never headed, and won by a length and a half, Forest Queen third, about four lengths behind the second. TARANAKI CUP, Of CO sovs. Distance, two miles. Mr It. Mclvor’s Redeemer, 3 yrs ... 1 Mr AYaltfr’d Venus-Transit, i yrs .. ~ ... 2
The betting was 2 to 1 on Yenus-Tranalt, Isaak Walton was officially struck out. The non-favorite made all the running, and won by two lengths. Time, 4mln, 13sec. THE TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs. Mr Brewer’s Polly, aged, 7st, 1 Mr Day’s Isaak Walton. 6 yrs, 7st 101 b.. .. 2 Mr Gibson s Otawa, 6 yrs, 7st 61b 3 Mr Walter’s Hippocampus, 5 yrs, Ost' . . 0 Hotting : 6 to 4 agst Hippocampus, 2 to X against Folly, 4 to 1 against Isaak Walton and Otawa, 6to 1 agst Jocasta. The favorite got the best of the start, and made the running, with Otawa and Folly ia close attendance. Otawa led passing the stand the first time, Isaak Walton running into second place. They ran in this order about half a mile, when Isaak Walton deprived Otawa of the lead, and led for the next half mile, Folly being a good third. Folly gained upon the leaders, and when fairly into the straight for home he challenged Isaak Walton, and after a tremendous struggle won by a short head, Otawa, a length behind, being third.,
