THE RECLAIMED LAND.

TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —Is there not something wrong iu the action o£ the Government in respect to the reclaimed land ? I see by a paragraph in all the papers that the auctioneer is named who is authorised to sell the same. 1. Did not the Government promise that the land should not be forced into the market to the detriment of the interests of the Corporation ? 2. ' Why is the property, if sold by public auction, sold by anyone except the Crown Lands Commissioner ? 3. If the property ia to be sold by public auction, why do not the Government advertise for public tenders for performing these services ? All the auctioneers contribute to the public revenue, and all have an equal right to a share of the chance of any business that the Government may have. 4. If economy is the order of the day with the present Government, how is it that they will lay themselves open to be taxed with extravagance by paying for the services of any auctioneer when they have highly-paid servants of their own, who could and ought, in the public interests, to perform these duties, as in the case of the Crown laud sales, which are conducted by the Commissioner, Mr. Holdsworth ? I am, &c., ARaua.
