They will build an old men’s refuge and a homo for orphans, &0., and appoint a relieving officer and a master and matron for the homo. This is in compliance with the Government wishes. Dunedin, Friday. James Ashcroft, accountant, Dunedin, and formerly member of the Provincial Council, has been appointed editor of the Otago Daily* Times and TTfiness. A deputation from the Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway Company waited on Mr. Macandrew this aftoraoonin reference to establishing tram communication with Portobello, instead of forming a railway line to that district, as wus first intended. Mr. Macandrew said the Government, in the public interest, would offer the company every facility. Invercargilu, Friday. A banquet was given here last night to the Southland representatives in the House. There was only a moderate attendance, about sixty being present. Mr. Shanks, county chairman, occupied the chair, and speeches were delivered by Messrs. Fcldwick, Joyce, Hodgkinson, and Wood. A splendid dinner was provided by Kingsland and Sou, but intoxicants were totally absent, the banquet beiug conducted strictly on temperance principles.
