Sailed : St. Kilda, early this morning; Emerald, for Wellington; Elngarooma, for Wellington, at 8 a-m; Wakatlpu, for Wellington, at 8.30 p.m. The Gazelle, which left here for Melbourne on the 17th October, is now lying at the Heads, having put bock. She has been lying at Port Underwood for some time. AUCKLAND, • Thursday. Sailed ; Wanaka. Passengers fer Wellington; Mrs. Rountree, Miss Mettam, Rev. Walsh, Messrs Hutchison, McLean, and Whitaker. Tho barque Bonita, 599 tons, was loading at New York for Auckland and Wellington when the mail left, and was to sail at tho end of November. CASTLEPOINT, Thursday. Arrived; Go-Ahead, from Wellington, early. NAPIER, Thursday. Arrived: Hinemoa, at 8 a.m.; Taranaki, from Wellington, at 10.50 a.m, NELSON. Thursday. Arrived : Taiaroa. from Taranaki, with San Francisco mail, at .10.30 a.m. . The following vessels were in the harbor last night: Steamers—Stormbird, Manawatu, Kiwi, Napier, Wallace, and Stella; ships— Rakaia, Jessie Headman. St. Leonards. Wairoa, and Zedandia; barques— Malay, Craigie Lea, Anne Melhuish, and Sophia R. Ltthra; topsaU schooners—Hally Bailey and Rachel Cohen. The steamer Stella, from Cape Saunders and Kalkoura, arrived hero at 2.15 yesterday. She landed material for the erection of a new lighthouse at Cape Saunders. The steamer Taiaroa, with tho 'Frisco mail, will arrive hero early this morning. - The steamer Wakatlpu, from the South, is due here to-d iy. She leaves during the evening for Sydney.
Tho steamer Ladybird is laid up at Port Chalmers. Mr. Garrard, who waa master, is now mate of the Taupo. Tiie steamer Rlngarooma, from Melbourne via the South, is due here to-day. The brigantine Enterprise, from Kaipara, arrived in harbor yesterday morning. She brings a fall cargo of timber, consigned to Messrs. Stewart and Co. Mr Grant, formerly para >r of the Wakatlpu, has exchanged positions with Mr, Ponsouby. Tho Wellington sailed shortly after noon yesterday. The Taupo, in command of Captain Cromarty, formerly of the Beautiful Star, left Port Chalmers on Tuesdav, at 6 p.m.. arrived at Lyttelton at 11 a m. left again at 5.30 p m., and arrived here at 10 o’clock yesterday morning. She left again during the afternoon. The p.s: Manawatu crossed the Wanganui bar at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and arrived here at 7.50 yesterday morning, having experienced westerly winds and heavy aea v > She returns to r Wanganui at noon to-day. Mr. Moore was granted permission to net as master of the ketch Thames yesterday, from Peloras Sound and back, by the Collector of Customs. The Napier arrived from Blenheim yesterday evening. She made' the run In five and a quarter hours. The barque Alexa. from London, also the Gorina, a new vesel—both of which are consigned to Messrs. Turnbull and Co—arc now due. We should not be surprised to see the numbers of the May, from Hongkong, hoisted on the flagstaff during the week. The brigantine Rachel Cohen, from Melbourne, arrived off the Heads yesterday evening shortly before dusk. She left Melbourne on the 10th instant, and has mode a remarkably good passage. For tho first eight days she experienced moderate westerly weather. When nearing the land strong north and noth-west gales were met with. She made Cape Farewell on Wednesday evening, and arrived as above. She brings a full cargo of gennral merchandise, consigned to Messrs. Turnbull and Co. The barque Olustee, from New York via Lyttelton, may be looked for this morning, as she has left Ly ttelton. \ . The steamer, Samson, which left here for West Wanganui and Waltara, only left the latter place yesterday, having been detained there through the late boisterous weather. She may be therefore expected to arrive here early on Monday morning The Stormbird will probably come off the Patent Slip this evening.; The steamer Wallace/ from Nelson, arrived at the wharf last night. She. left Nelson at 10.30 yesterday morning, and experienced a fresh. north-west breeze across. Tho steamer Kiwi, from the East Coast, arrived yesterday afternoon. She returns again this evening. In another column will be found the decision of tho Court of Inquiry relative to the stranding of the ship City of Auckland. The certificates of tbo master and officers have been returnedAdvices from .Western Australia state that upwards of 109 tons of Castor oil have been salvaged, besides other property,-from the wreck of the James Service, and shipped to Melbourne. Speaking pf tho newly appointed commodore on the Australian station, Captain J. O. Wilson, K.N., the j/ome News says;— *'Captain Wilson, It will bo remembered, was commander of H.M.S. Bombay In 1865. when she was burnt at sea en route for the South Pacific. For his exertions then In saving life, which were of the most untiring description, and in which ho himself ran the most Imminent danger, ho was promoted to the tank of post-captain. As such ho accompanied Admiral Ramsay—tho present Lord Dalhousie—to South America as flag-captain, and on his return was appointed in the same capacity to Admiral Elliot at Sheerncs*. After that he acted as captaln-in-charge of tho training establishment at Davenport, and most recently has had tho command ef II M S. Thunderer, one of tho latest specimens of naval architecture.”
