RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Wednesday, November 20. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. One inebriate was fined 10s. for drunkenness; or in default, 24 hours’ imprisonment. ASSAULT. John Armstrong was charged by Henry Grossman with assaulting him on Tuesday night. From the evidence it appeared that the complainant visited a house of bad repute, and while there defendant said that he (defendant) was a detective, and put complainant out of the house. Previous to his being ejected a woman in the house took away his watch and rings ; these were, however, returned. Detective Farrell said that he knew the defendant in Otago, and gave him a bad character. His Worship fined him £5, or eight weeks’ imprisonment. USING FIREARMS. R. J. Kells was summoned for using threatening language towards James Aplin, at Kaiwarra. Mr. Ollivier appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Fitzgerald for the defendant. Complainant said that he was a settler, residing at Kaiwarra. On the 16th instant defendant refused to allow him and his man to drive some cattle through agate, and presented a pistol, saying, “I’ll cook your goose.” Witness jumped out of the cart and took the pistol away. Defendant stated that it was not loaded. For the defence it was stated that defendant had been wishing to start a milk cart in opposition to Aplin’s, and that a dispute between the parties on that score had arisen. Defendant was bound over to keep the peace for six months, himself in £2O, and two sureties of £lO each, CIVIL CASES. Judgments for the plaintiffs for the amounts claimed were given in the following cases:— New Zealand-Times v. T. Margetts, £6 385.; W. Ebden v. Southey, £ll 2s. 6d.; J. Carr v. J. Simpson, £3 35.; A. Diinant v. G. S. Sellars, £5 15s. 4d.
